Solar Rooftop Subsidy in Karnataka 2026: PM Surya Ghar Guide for Bangalore Homes

Rooftop solar has never been more affordable in Karnataka. Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the central government pays a direct subsidy into your bank account once your grid-connected rooftop system is installed and inspected. For a typical Bangalore home, that is up to ₹78,000 off the cost of a 3 kW system.

This guide explains how much you can get, who is eligible, and exactly how the process works with BESCOM (and other Karnataka ESCOMs such as CESC, MESCOM, HESCOM and GESCOM).

How much solar subsidy can you get?

CategorySystem sizeCentral subsidy
ResidentialUp to 2 kW₹30,000 per kW
ResidentialAdditional capacity up to 3 kW₹18,000 for the 3rd kW
ResidentialAbove 3 kWCapped at ₹78,000 total
Group Housing Society / RWACommon facilities incl. EV charging, up to 500 kW₹18,000 per kW

So a 1 kW system gets ₹30,000, 2 kW gets ₹60,000, and 3 kW or larger gets the maximum ₹78,000. Subsidy amounts are notified by MNRE and can change — we always confirm current figures before you book.

Who is eligible?

  • You must be a residential consumer with an electricity connection in your name at the property.
  • The house must have a suitable, shadow-free roof (around 80–100 sq ft per kW).
  • The system must be on-grid (grid-connected with net metering) and installed by a registered vendor using approved (ALMM-listed, DCR) panels.
  • The household should not have availed another solar subsidy for the same connection.
  • Apartment associations (RWA / GHS) can apply for common-area loads like lifts, pumps, lighting and STP.

Step-by-step: how to claim the subsidy in Bangalore

  1. Register on the national PM Surya Ghar portal with your state, ESCOM (e.g. BESCOM), consumer number and mobile.
  2. Apply for rooftop solar and get feasibility approval from BESCOM.
  3. Choose a registered vendor and get the system installed. Talwin handles design, supply and installation.
  4. Submit installation details on the portal and apply for net metering.
  5. Net meter installation & inspection by BESCOM; commissioning certificate is generated.
  6. Submit bank details and a cancelled cheque. The subsidy is credited to your account, typically within about 30 days of commissioning.

Talwin handles the full BESCOM net-metering & subsidy paperwork for you.

Documents you'll need

  • Latest electricity bill (consumer / RR number)
  • Aadhaar and PAN of the account holder
  • Property tax receipt / ownership proof
  • Bank account details & cancelled cheque
  • Roof photographs; for apartments, an RWA resolution

What does a 3 kW system cost after subsidy?

A quality 3 kW on-grid system in Bangalore typically costs in the range of ₹1.7–2.0 lakh depending on panels, inverter and structure height. After the ₹78,000 subsidy, your effective investment falls to roughly ₹0.9–1.2 lakh. A 3 kW system generates around 360–400 units a month in Bangalore — enough to wipe out most of a typical family's bill — giving a payback of roughly 3–4 years.

Tip: Size your system to your actual consumption. Under net metering, exporting far more than you use earns a much lower rate, so oversizing doesn't pay.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying non-DCR panels — these are not eligible for subsidy.
  • Installing before the BESCOM feasibility approval.
  • Low, weak structures that make cleaning hard and rust in 3–4 years — insist on hot-dip galvanised structures.
  • Ignoring shadow from water tanks, parapets or neighbouring buildings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the solar subsidy available for off-grid systems?

No. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy is for grid-connected (on-grid) rooftop systems with net metering.

Can tenants apply for the subsidy?

The electricity connection must be in the applicant's name. Tenants typically need the owner's consent and connection in their name.

Does Karnataka give an additional state subsidy?

Currently the main benefit is the central subsidy plus net metering. State benefits change from time to time — ask us for the latest.
